A teenager left seriously ill when doctors mistakenly injected an anti-cancer drug into his spine has died.

Wayne Jowett, 18, was being treated at Nottingham's University Hospital.

His father, also Wayne, and mother Stella announced his death through their lawyers.

Wayne, an apprentice heavy goods vehicle mechanic, had been having treatment at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre for leukaemia.

On January 4 doctors injected Vincristine into his spine and, despite realising their mistake, Wayne became increasingly ill.

There is no known cure or antidote to Vincristine being administered in this way. It leads to a slow paralysis of the body until the heart finally stops.
