Four members of the SDLP party have so far put their names forward for the position of deputy leader of the party following the announcement of party leader, John Hume to resign and deputy leader, Seamus Mallon’s decision not to replace him.

Finance Minister, Mark Durkan is so far the only candidate running for the post of party leader, but there is strong competition amongst his colleagues to become his deputy leader.

The four candidates are: Alban Maginnis, Brid Rodgers, Denis Haughey and Sean Farren, who are all considered to be long-serving members from the centrist element of the party.

Nominations for both posts do not close for another eight days and the voting will take place in early November.
