A leading Hamas activist has been seriously wounded in the West Bank by shots witnesses say were fired from nearby Israeli army positions.

The wounded man, Mahmoud Madani, was walking from a mosque in the Balata refugee camp to his nearby grocery shop when he was gunned down.

Doctors said the 25-year-old was shot four times in the upper body.

Mr Madani was an important local in Hamas, the Islamic militant group, in the area and had served four years in an Israeli jail.

In Gaza City, meanwhile, about 1,000 Palestinians have staged a rally in support of Iraq, the target of recent US and British air strikes.

"Saddam, we wait for your rockets to hit Tel Aviv," the crowd chanted, as some marchers fired automatic rifles in the air.

Saddam is "the leader who will liberate Palestine," one of the banners read.
