It has emerged that the EU Commission is investigating the trebling in cost of a controversial CIE signalling system.

It has emerged that the EU Commission is investigating the trebling in cost of a controversial CIE signalling system.

During the opening statement of a public inquiry into the project, chairman Sean Doherty of Fianna Fail, revealed that the Commission wants a full explanation of the cost over-run.

CIE lost out on substantial EU funding for the safety system because of delays in completion.

Deputy Doherty said the Commission's enquiries are ongoing and that it has sought a full report from the Dept of Trade, Enterprise and Employment on how the project was managed.
