The Labour Party has come out in support of student calls for the upcoming general election to be held at a weekend.

Party spokesman Eamon Gilmore said tens of thousands of young people were denied a vote in the recent abortion referendum because the poll was held on a Wednesday, when most students were away from their home constituencies.

Mr Gilmore said the system of postal voting for students is convoluted and urged the Government to facilitate their needs by calling a weekend election.
