Michael Schumacher put world championship rival Fernando Aonso in the shade in second practice for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.

The Ferrari driver, who has won the last two races, was the fastest race driver in the one-hour session while championship leader Alonso was down in 15th in his Renault.

BMW-Sauber tester Robert Kubica put his only day of action this weekend to good use by topping the timing sheets thanks to his lap of one minute 16.225 seconds, 0.277secs clear of Schumacher.

Red Bull test driver Robert Doornbos enjoyed a rare trip to the top three with third while Kimi Raikkonen gave McLaren hope with fourth on engine partner Mercedes’ home ground.

Felipe Massa completed a productive day for Ferrari by taking fifth, just ahead of Honda tester Anthony Davidson.

Jenson Button had been the fastest race driver in morning practice, when Williams’ Alex Wurz set the standard, but he was less impressive in the afternoon.

The Honda driver, who has gone five races without scoring a point, was down in 10th place, one behind team-mate Rubens Barrichello. David Coulthard was 20th for Red Bull.

Super Aguri, rebuked by stewards for using illegal tyre warmers this morning, handed a belated debut to their new car today, but only Takuma Sato set a time in second practice.

New race driver Sakon Yamamoto suffered technical problems and did not record a flying lap, while Sato propped up the rankings.
