Racing at Newcastle this afternoon goes ahead after the track passed a morning inspection.

Officials were worried about possible overnight rain but the track enjoyed a dry night.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong said: “We have had a dry night and we are going to go ahead.

“We might get some rain later, possibly five millimetres, but we should be able to cope with that.

“We’ve been very lucky and got none of the rain that’s been on the west side of the country.”

The going at Newcastle is officially described as heavy.
