Ghana midfielder Andre Ayew has won the praise of his team-mates after the Black Stars booked a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Asamoah Gyan grabbed the headlines with the extra-time winner in his side’s last 16 encounter with the United States in Rustenburg, but Ayew – who is the son of one of Ghana’s all-time greats Abedi Pele – also impressed at the heart of the team.
Ayew, who was born in the northern French town of Seclin, is set to be suspended for the quarter-final match with Uruguay after picking up his second caution of the tournament against the USA.
His absence could be a sore miss for Ghana after his team-mates admitted the 20-year-old’s significant contribution so far.
Defender John Pantsil told fifa.com: “I’m very happy for him. He’s imposing himself little by little in the team and he’s clearly one of the most talented players in the squad.
“He proved against the USA he could carry the whole side on his shoulders.”
Ayew’s midfield sidekick Anthony Annan added: “He’s a super lad. Since his arrival in the senior team, he’s always been very respectful towards the older players.
“He listens to their advice and worked hard to win his place. He’s not the type to always show off, even if he has the talent to justify it. We’re all very happy for him.”
