A man who attempted to rob a petrol station in Co Meath has been hospitalised after he was struck by a car while fleeing the scene.

The man held up the Roscross petrol station at Tara, just outside Navan, with a sawn-off shotgun shortly before 10pm last night.

He was handed a sum of money, but dropped both the cash and the gun following a struggle with the garage owner.

He was then hit by a car as he crossed a road while fleeing the shop.
