Five arrested in shoe-bomb probe
French anti-terrorist police have taken five people into custody in connection with the investigation into suspected shoe bomber Richard Reid.
The suspects, believed to be Islamic fundamentalists, were rounded up in Paris suburbs.
Police were acting on an order from Parisian anti-terrorist judge Jean-Louis Bruguiere.
Police found three guns, one of them with a scope, during searches in the suburbs of Mantes-la-Jolie and Evry.
The suspects, two Pakistanis and three North Africans, are being questioned at police headquarters in Paris.
No further details were available, and the suspects' relation to the Reid investigation was not immediately clear.
In April, police and security agents arrested seven people suspected of providing logistical help to Reid before he allegedly tried to ignite his explosive-laden shoes on a Paris-Miami flight.
Reid, a 28-year-old British citizen, has been in US custody since December 22, when he allegedly attempted to ignite the explosives in his shoes during a trans-Atlantic flight from Paris to Miami. He has pleaded innocent to nine charges against him.
