Supermodel Niki Taylor is critical with severe liver damage after a car she was riding in crashed into a pole in Atlanta.

The 26-year-old, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not thrown from the car and initially appeared to be unhurt, her publicist Lou Taylor said.

She said the model was awake but heavily sedated. No surgery is planned.

"Everyone felt she was OK and then she had severe stomach pains," said the publicist.

Driver James Renegar, 27, told police he lost control of the Nissan Maxima when he looked down to answer his mobile phone. Police said they did not suspect drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident.

Niki Taylor was in Atlanta to visit friends and planned to return home to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She is the mother of twin six-year-old boys.

She was on the cover of Seventeen magazine when she was barely 14 and has appeared in adverts for Cover Girl cosmetics and Liz Claiborne fashions. She has also been pictured in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue.
