The leader of a small Palestinian faction said tonight that his group had helped broker a truce agreement between Fatah and Hamas militants.

Saleh Zidan, the Gaza head of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, told Al-Jazeera satellite television a deal had been reached that would include an immediate ceasefire, a withdrawal of gunmen from the streets and an end to incitement.

Zidan’s announcement could not be confirmed with either Fatah or Hamas officials and fighting continued to rage in Gaza after his interview with Al-Jazeera.

The factional violence, which broke out a week ago, killed three people today.
