Safety council laments failure of media campaigns

The National Safety Council has said the public is not listening to messages about road safety, despite a number of high-profile media campaigns in recent years.

Pat Costello, a spokesman for the council, said drivers are continually being warned about drink-driving, speeding and failing to wear a seat belt, but the carnage on Ireland’s roads shows no sign of decreasing.

"Drivers must take on board their personal responsibilities when they get behind the wheel of the car," he said.

"In general terms, we know the causes, we know the problems. All drivers out there also know the problems and the causes and it’s up to them to remedy their behaviour on the roads in all our interests."

Mr Costello was speaking after nine people lost their lives on Ireland’s roads in the last three days.
