Queiroz repsponds in Sporting row

Manchester United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz has vowed to defend himself against any formal accusation that he has unsettled Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso.

In a wide-ranging interview with the Portuguese press ahead of last month’s Champions League meeting between Manchester United and Sporting at Old Trafford, Queiroz spoke in glowing terms about a number of Portugal-based players, including Veloso.

The relatively innocuous comments were seized on by Sporting chairman Filipe Soares Franco who, despite being informed Queiroz had denied rather than confirmed Veloso was a January transfer target for the Red Devils, let fly with a personal and wounding attack on the former Lisbon coach.

In condemning Queiroz’s conduct as “ethically and morally, very low”, Franco also triggered a row which the United man unwisely got himself into, ending with him being declared “persona non-grata” by Sporting.

The row is mildly embarrassing, given the close links between Sporting and United, who have signed both Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani from the Portuguese outfit in recent years and also have a co-operation agreement over the development of young players.

However, Queiroz is sure of his ground, a view backed by Sir Alex Ferguson, and is not expecting Franco to respond to his challenge to report the matter to UEFA or FIFA for a full investigation.

“The idea I am going around Europe trying to persuade players to sign for Manchester United is ridiculous,” he said.

“We have seven central midfield players already, so why we would want any more?

“The president’s comments were not only insulting and a personal slur, they were factually incorrect and despite people telling him so, he has refused to retract them.

“If he really believes what he is saying, he should tell UEFA or FIFA. Then they can look at it and prove what I am saying is right. Sadly, I don’t think he will.

“It is not a very nice situation, given the history I have with Sporting, although the fact the relationship between them and United remains strong says quite a lot.”
