Amnesty International has denounced Indonesia for executing two convicted murderer, the first executions in the country in six years.

Fredik Soru and Gerson Pandie were executed on Saturday by firing squad in a forest about 25 miles east of Kupang.

The two men, along with an accomplice who died in jail, were sentenced to death in 1989 after being found guilty of killing a couple and their two children.

Amnesty said in a statement: "The resumption of executions clearly goes against the worldwide trend toward the abolition of this inherently unjust and arbitrary punishment."
