Libyan militias engage in battle
Fighting has today broken out between rival Libyan militias near a former major military camp of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.
The clashes marked the fourth day of confrontations between the two groups, the most sustained violence since the fall of Gaddafi’s regime last month. The fighting has killed four people so far.
The camp is located along a road about halfway between the capital Tripoli and the coastal city of Zawiya.
Journalists were kept from the scene, but the sound of gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades could be heard in the distance.
Mohammed al-Hadwash, a local commander of fighters from Tripoli, says gunmen from Zawiya and the nearby town of Warshefana are fighting for control of the camp.
