Colin McRae will race his first rally for almost a year after being drafted in to replace world champion Sebastien Loeb in the Kronos Citroen team for Rally Turkey.

Loeb, this year’s championship leader, recently broke his arm in a cycling accident and former team-mate McRae will drive the number one car in his place.

Nicky Grist will co-drive for the 1995 champion in the Xsara, which the Scot last drove in 2003.

A statement from the Kronos team said: “(Team boss) Marc van Dalen and (Citroen Sport director) Guy Frequelin have searched for the best solution to help the team defend its leadership in both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championship.

“Colin McRae has been chosen to help the team, and he is highly motivated to do his maximum to serve Seb and Kronos Total Citroen’s interests.”

McRae’s last WRC appearance came at the end of last season, when he drove two rallies for the factory Skoda team, who withdrew for the 2006 campaign.
