A Palestinian suicide bomber riding a bike attacked an army patrol near a West Bank checkpoint today, wounding at least two people, the Israeli army said.

Israeli rescue services said it had evacuated two people to hospital. One of the wounded was in moderate to serious condition, the rescue services said, adding that the other person was lightly injured.

Israel Radio reported the two are Israeli soldiers.

The explosion at the checkpoint – not far from the West Bank town of Qalqilya - was caused by a Palestinian suicide bomber who was riding a bike, an army spokeswoman said.

The radio reported the bomber blew himself up near a military jeep, wounding the soldiers inside.

In a missile strike yesterday, Israel killed three Palestinian militants, including one of them a leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, a militant group linked to Yasser Arafat’s Fatah faction.

Zakariye Zubeydi, Al Aqsa’s commander in the West Bank town of Jenin, not far from Qalqilya, vowed to avenge his comrades’ death within 24 hours.
