Vodafone appoints new European chief executive

Vodafone Group today announced the appointment of a new chief executive for Europe.

Vodafone Group today announced the appointment of a new chief executive for Europe.

Former Vodafone Italy chief executive Vittorio Colao, 44, will join the board on October 9.

Mr Colao has previously also enjoyed regional responsibility for Southern Europe , the Middle East and Africa.

He was a member of the Vodafone Group Board from 2002 to 2004 prior to joining RCS, the Italian publishing and media company, where he has been chief executive for the last two years.

Mr Colao will also succeed Julian Horn-Smith as deputy chief executive for the Group.

"I am delighted to welcome Vittorio back to Vodafone in such an important role in my senior management team," said group chief executive, Arun Sarin.

"Vittorio made an outstanding contribution in his previous roles at Vodafone and he is a highly effective manager.

"We have a number of major challenges and opportunities in our European region and I am confident that, given his background and experience, Vittorio is well equipped to succeed in this key position. I am very much looking forward to working with him again".
