More than 4,000 workers at Australian mining giant BHP Ltd’s iron ore and steelworks downed tools today for a 48-hour strike over work contracts, union officials said.

Australian Worker’s Union (AWU) spokesman Andrew Whiley said the action would halt production at the company’s steelworks and coated steel plants south of Sydney.

The action is part of a campaign against BHP’s plans to introduce individual labour contracts for emergency service workers from another company, Serco, at the plant, Whiley said.
