A huge fire has caused considerable damage to the Riverdale Hotel in the Co Monaghan town of Ballybay.

The fire was discovered shortly before 10am and four fire units from Ballybay, Castleblaney and Monaghan town were at the scene attempting to extinguish the flames.

The Riverdale Hotel, a well-known landmark on the western side of Ballybay, has been closed for some time and was undergoing refurbishment prior to Christmas.

It is unclear how this morning’s fire started, but a technical examination will get underway once the blaze is brought under control.
