Three people were arrested today as police launched a murder inquiry following the discovery of the body of a man in a burning shed in a disused cattle market.

A full-scale police search of the market in the centre of Limavady, Co Derry in Northern Ireland, was being carried out today following the discovery of the body last night.

Police described the death of the man as suspicious and said it was being treated as murder.

The grim discovery was made when the fire service was called to deal with the burning shed in the derelict market, which was sold for development by the local council just last week.

The man’s name has not been released, but he is understood to come from the town.

SDLP local councillor Dessie Lowry said councillors had been meeting to discuss the sale of the old market when they were informed of the death.

“When news of this very serious crime came through, we thought it inappropriate in the circumstances to carry forward any further business,” said Mr Lowry.

He added: “A very serious crime has been committed here in Limavady town centre and we need the public to come forward with information.”

He said the shed had been used over the years “by people who abuse alcohol“.
