The jury in the trial at the Central Criminal Court of a man accused of raping a woman in an alleyway in her Co Cork home town has been discharged after failing to reach a verdict.

The five women and seven men deliberated for almost seven hours before telling Mr Justice Diarmuid O'Donavan they were deadlocked on day-nine of the trial.

Mr Justice O'Donavan thanked the jury, which spent one night in a hotel, for its work on the case and discharged it.

He remanded the 35-year-old accused in custody to the next session for fixing trial dates.

He had denied two charges of rape and buggery of the 27-year-old woman on September 3, 2000.
