35 Iraqi civilians killed in mortar attacks on Baquba suburbs

At least 35 people have been killed in a mortar attack on villages around the provincial capital of Iraq’s eastern Diyala province, police said.

A police official from the city of Baquba told the Associated Press that at least 35 civilians died when mortars landed on their villages in the nearby suburbs on Thursday night. At least 45 other people were injured.

The official did not speculate on who might have carried out the attack, but the Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility for several recent attacks in the volatile province.

Hospital officials corroborated the casualties.
