PSNI investigate murder of man from East Timor

Detectives are treating the death of an East Timorese man in a suspected stabbing incident in Dungannon as murder.

Officers confirmed a murder investigation has been launched into the fatal incident in the Woodvale Park area of the town in the early hours.

A 34-year-old man arrested in connection with death continued to be questioned by the police this afternoon.

Dungannon has a large foreign national population, with many people with Portuguese-speaking backgrounds having set up to home in the town to work in local meat-processing factories.

As well as from Portugal itself, the town has attracted new residents from former Portuguese colonies including East Timor in south east Asia and Angola in Africa.

Police said the dead man had been living and working in the area.

Member of Parliament for the area Michelle Gildernew expressed her sympathies with his relatives.

“I am deeply saddened at this devastating news and my thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased man at this time,” said the Fermanagh and South Tyrone Sinn Féin representative.

“This man’s family in East Timor are waking up to terrible news and they need to be supported as they try to make the arrangements to have the remains returned home.

“We value and have great respect for the migrant community that now live in the Dungannon area and I am sure that local people will offer their full support to the East Timorese community in the coming period.”

Officers have appealed for anyone with information to come forward and have set up a special incident room at Dungannon police station.
