Russia has recognised the Libyan rebel movement as the country’s acting leadership.

Russia has recognised the Libyan rebel movement as the country’s acting leadership.

A short statement from the Russian foreign ministry today said diplomatic relations between Moscow and Tripoli will continue and it recognised the rebel Transitional National Council.

Russia was critical of the Nato military campaign that aided the rebels in overthrowing Muammar Gaddafi.

An international conference on Libya is taking place today in Paris. The Russian envoy has said he will defend Russia’s economic interests in Libya.
