An Afghan has been shot dead during a gun battle with US special forces near the American base at Bagram, a US spokesman said today.

The clash happened yesterday near the town of Deh Rawood, a day after a 107mm rocket landed outside Bagram air base and several of its observation points came under fire.

On July 1, US gunships attacked what turned out to be a wedding at Deh Rawood. About 30 people were killed, mostly women and children.

At the time, the US military said its aircraft had come under fire from the ground, but no anti-aircraft weapons were found.

US bases across Afghanistan are the frequent target of artillery and small-arms fire. Often, the unknown assailants attack and disappear by the time US forces respond.

There were no indications of the identity of the dead Afghan man.
