Premiership: United keep up the pressure

Manchester United maintained the pressure on their title rivals as they powered past Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with a display fuelled with determination not to give up their crown without a fight.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, who moved at least temporarily top of the table, seized an early lead through a 30-yard strike by Paul Scholes and then saw Ruud van Nistelrooy double their advantage.

As Chelsea’s faint hopes of a Champions League finish were effectively ended, United gained revenge for their 3-0 home defeat by the Blues in December as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rounded off the scoring late on.
