Watchdog calls for investigation into Nokia phone explosions

A Dutch consumer watchdog has called for Nokia Corp to launch an in-depth investigation regarding two Nokia mobile phones which exploded in the Netherlands within months of each other.

A Dutch consumer watchdog has called for Nokia Corp to launch an in-depth investigation regarding two Nokia mobile phones which exploded in the Netherlands within months of each other.

The Consumentenbond also alerted the Dutch government inspection service to the potential dangers of the products.

Previous reports of Nokia handset explosions have been caused by batteries from by other manufacturers, but according to the Consumentenbond watchdog organisation, a recent incident involved a new Nokia phone with the original battery.

The Dutch Nokia division said it is investigating the latest incident.

In February this year, Nokia warned customers over the use of non-original mobile phone batteries saying it could damage both batteries and the phones.

Nokia said that based on its investigations, the batteries don't fulfil the safety and quality requirements Nokia applies to its own batteries.

In September Sony Ericsson recalled 350,000 chargers for a range of its handsets in Britain after 10 chargers exploded.
