The Taoiseach has said that wide-ranging reform of the public sector will take place over the next number of years.

Brian Cowen says the Government will have to downsize and remould the public sector and delivery of public services.

Speaking in Jersey last night the Taoiseach said a number of issues will have to be addressed the years ahead.

"Obviously the level of personnel is one thing, but there’s also the whole question of work practices, roistering, how the whole pay issue is structured and how it varies from sector to sector," said Cowen.

"There’s a huge amount of work to be done on that. It’s not an overnight thing to turn it around or change it."
