Quinn: Personal insolvency to be dealt with on case-by-case basis

The Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has said all of the debt reduction guidelines under new insolvency legislation will have to be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has said all of the debt reduction guidelines under new insolvency legislation will have to be considered on a case-by-case basis.

He was responding to questions about comments by Transport Minster Leo Varadkar in today's Irish Examiner, in which he said some working women will have to choose between their careers and paying the mortgage if they enter the insolvency regime.

The guidelines from the Insolvency Service of Ireland are due to be published after Easter.

The Education Minister said Minister Varadkar was referring to specific situations he has come across when he spoke to the paper and no two cases will be the same.

Mr Quinn said: "I think the way Leo was talking, he was citing a couple of examples of a couple of women who were in those particular circumstances.

"I think when we get to the point where people are working on a one-to-one basis talking to the insolvency consultant, all those factors will have to be taken into account, because no two people are exactly the same."
