The move comes in the wake of a weekend poll which showed that 85% of Irish shoppers believe they are paying more since the introduction of the euro.

Tesco's rivals are expected to respond, particularly because the run-up to the St Patrick's and Easter holidays are traditionally times of high-spending amongst consumers.
