Velazquez to ride Araafa

John Velazquez has been booked to partner the Jeremy Noseda-trained Araafa in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs on November 4.

As a result, Stan James has shortened the Irish 2000 Guineas hero, trimming the three-year-old in to 5-1 from 6-1.

Neil Morrice, on-course and media representative, said: “Araafa’s ability to lie up with the pace and attain a handy position should stand him in good stead in the Mile and in John Velazquez his connections have snapped up the best man in the business.

“It would not surprise us to see across-the-board support for the colt when the news gets around.”

Noseda is more than happy with Araafa’s condition ahead of what will be the Mull Of Kintyre colt’s final career start before he retires to stand at Plantation Stud, close to Newmarket.

The dual Group One winner showed his wellbeing with a workout on the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket on Sunday morning, stretching out in company with a lead horse.

Noseda told his official website: “Araafa worked well over six and half furlongs on Sunday morning and he has come out of it in great order. I feel he is in as good a shape as at any time this season.

“He has been entered for the Breeders’ Cup Mile and will ship to America this Sunday.

“John Velazquez will ride him at Churchill Downs and we are delighted to have his services.”

Noseda will be seeking a second Breeders’ Cup triumph in the wake of Wilko’s victory in the Juvenile in 2004.
