The Education Minister Ruairi Quinn will attend a meeting later to consider the establishment of a fund for victims of institutional child abuse.

It is estimated that around 1,000 former residents of institutions run by religious orders are eligible to apply for support from the fund.

The Residential Institutions Statutory Bill will ensure that compensation is given to the victims in a fair and timely manner.

Minister Quinn wants the religious orders to contribute 50% towards this fund, which is estimated at more than €1.36bn.
