Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o has apologised for chanting abuse about former club Real Madrid.
The Cameroon international caused controversy at the weekend by remarks he made about Los Meringues during celebrations following Barca’s La Liga title triumph on Saturday.
But he has since admitted he may have gone too far, saying: “One thing is to feel something, but it is another thing to actually say it.”
Eto’o has never made a secret of his contempt for Barca’s rivals after they signed him as a youngster before sending him out on loan to Real Mallorca and last summer rejected the chance to retain their share in the player.
Instead he was sold to Barca and flourished at the Catalan club, winning the league title with two games to spare and scoring 24 goals in the process.
The Madrid media responded furiously to Eto’o’s over-enthusiastic outburst and he has since asked for forgiveness.
“The first thing I ask is to be forgiven,” he told a specially-arranged media conference. “I must apologise for what I said on Sunday.
“I must ask all the fans and people at Real Madrid to forgive and accept my apology. I never meant to disrespect Real Madrid or anyone. It was just a joyous moment and I started singing, nothing more. There was no other intent there. If I could I would erase the whole episode.”
The joyous Barca squad partied for 24 hours following the 1-1 draw at Levante which was enough to secure the title following Madrid’s failure to beat Sevilla.
Eto’o blamed a “moment of euphoria” for his ill-advised party piece but insisted he has nothing against the club which brought him to Europe.
