Gilmore dismisses SF calls for independent inquiry into penalty points fiasco

The Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore is dismissing opposition party calls for an independent inquiry into the improper cancellation of penalty points.

The findings of an internal investigation into the allegations was published yesterday - showing no evidence of any criminality or corruption.

However Sinn Fein says gardaí should not be investigating gardaí.

But Gilmore says the report will now be passed onto the Oireachtas Justice Committee, which can examine the findings further.

"The report has been published and has been put to the Oireachtas committee.

"The committee is now free to take it forward and do whatever further questioning and exmining it feels it wants to do and do it in public, where everybody can see it."
