Official confirmation expected on gay marriage referendum

Official confirmation is expected within days that a referendum on gay marriage will take place.

The constitutional convention recommended that a referendum should be held on the issue and the Government has four months to respond - that is the first week in November.

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore confirmed at a Labour Youth Conference in Limerick over the weekend that the referendum will take place in the lifetime of this government. It is likely to happen in early 2015.
