Iranian police arrested about 50 young men and women accused of behaving indecently and dancing obscenely at a Tehran birthday party.

The government-owned newspaper Iran said that vice police entered an apartment after receiving the necessary permit and saw about 50 people aged between 17 and 25 dancing in ‘‘obscene’’ ways, many of them ‘‘half naked.’’

The paper said all those detained were Iranian, although two had foreign fathers, British and French.

Police arrested 262 people at a New Year’s Eve party last year, but such arrests are uncommon in Iran.

In Iran, which implements strict interpretation of Islamic laws, women are supposed to wear clothes that only shows their faces and hands.

But after the 1997 election of reformist President Mohammad Khatami, many women started appearing in public with make-up and loose head scarfs showing some hair.
