An Irishman in his late teens has died in suspicious circumstances on the island of Lanzarote.

The man died late yesterday following an incident in the popular holiday resort of Puerto del Carmen.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is in contact with authorities on the island, but no further details have been disclosed.

The death was not connected to the massive wildfires that are currently raging in the Canaries.

Irish people travelling to the islands are being urged not to travel near the affected areas.

However, the fires are well away from the main holiday resorts and airports.
