Tests for foot-and-mouth in North return positive

Farmers across the country are back on full alert following the second outbreak of foot-and-mouth in the North.

Farmers across the country are back on full alert following the second outbreak of foot-and-mouth in the North.

The results from the farm in Co Tyrone, which had earlier proved negative, confirmed the presence of the disease in a herd of cattle about 40 miles from the border.

The results, which returned last night, have created shock waves throughout the island and authorities here in the South have stressed the importance of redoubling efforts to ensure the virus does not spread beyond the border.

The specially formed sub-committee is expected to meet today to discuss the outbreak and what extra precautions could be taken.
