An oil tanker off Trinidad’s southern coast caught fire following an explosion today, Trinidad Coast Guard officials said.

Helicopters and rescue boats were sent but were unable to get close enough because of the intense heat, an unidentified coast guard spokesman told reporters.

The spokesman said the coast guard did not have sufficient equipment to manage the blaze.

It was not immediately clear what the extent of the blaze was or if anyone was injured.

It also was not known immediately where the tanker originated.
