Former French President Jacques Chirac he has been placed under investigation over allegations the city of Paris paid for jobs in his political party when he was mayor.

A statement from his office said he hoped the process will move forward quickly to show that "he can be faulted for nothing".

The 77-year-old said he was placed under preliminary investigation after being questioned on Friday about seven jobs. It centres on his time as mayor from 1977 to 1995.

Such charges mean an investigating judge has ruled there is strong evidence to suggest involvement in a crime, and give investigators more time to decide whether to send the suspects for trial or drop the case.
