Amnesty accuses Ireland of violating transgender individuals

Amnesty International has accused a handful of EU countries of violating the human rights of people trying to legally change their gender identities.

The organisation have published a report today examining procedures in Ireland as well six other member states.

Currently Ireland has no legislation in place to allow people to change their gender.

The report documents how transgender people are forced to undergo invasive surgery, forced sterilisation, hormone therapy, psychiatric testing, and even forced divorce before they can change their legal status," said Colm O'Gorman, executive director of Amnesty International.
