Security has been stepped up in Greece ahead of the planned lighting of the Olympic flame for the Beijing Games today.

The torch will be carried through 20 countries, including Tibet, ahead of the start of the games in August.

Last night, police in Nepal broke up a protest by 200 Tibetan refugees and monks near the offices of the United Nations by beating them with bamboo sticks.

Activists have claimed that today's ceremony at ancient Olympia is likely to lead to demonstrations over China's violent crackdown on recent protests in Tibet.

Anthony O'Brien of Tibet Support Group Ireland said that the Chinese government is failing to live up to commitments regarding the country's human rights record.
