Big Brother contestant worried about upsetting Asians

Big Brother competitor Narinder Kaur was scared she would offend Asian communities by going on the hit show, her husband has admitted.

Jatinder Punia has revealed his wife's fears about how her wearing a bikini one minute and praying the next would be perceived.

The 28-year-old is the first Asian contestant on the 24-hour fly-on-the-wall show and she was determined to practise her religion while in the east London house.

Last night viewers saw Narinder, who is Punjabi Sikh, cloaked in a white veil and praying. Moments later, the former Bollywood actress was sitting in the garden wearing a skimpy bikini.

Jatinder said: "Narinder would not want to offend people from either cultures but she was determined to be herself.

"It's very difficult for second and third generation Asians to retain both their Western culture and their religion but I'm sure Narinder will be fine.

"She has been into religion from a very young age. Narinder is such a caring, sensible person, it might help people understand more about the two cultures and how they work together," he added.

Jatinder, 30, spent all his Bank Holiday weekend glued to the television screen at the Leicester home watching his beautiful wife's antics in the house. He is fully behind her shot at stardom.

"I'm so proud of her. She looks amazing," he said, adding: "She has always taken care of her looks and now she looks better than ever. I have no idea what the odds are on her winning.

"I think she will get past week five at least. Narinder has a great calming quality and can defuse situations easily which should be a good asset to have when tensions rise."

But she might not be so calm as the weeks go on if she has to go without one of her favourite things - chocolate: "She is a chocoholic. She loves chocolates and crisps. Those and jogging are the things she will sorely miss."

The love struck couple met on their first day at Derby University and have been married for six years.

They only found out about Narinder's Big Brother chance five days before filming started and had little time to do any planning.

"We did discuss having little signs so I would know she is thinking about me. But Narinder thought the psychologists would pick on them and she didn't want to do anything that might work against her. I know I am always on her mind," he said.

The couple spent their sixth wedding anniversary, which was on Saturday, apart.
