Mitch: Years of drug abuse caused Amy's death

Mitch Winehouse spent his final moments with daughter Amy going through old family photographs.

Mitch Winehouse spent his final moments with daughter Amy going through old family photographs.

The tragic 'Rehab' singer died suddenly at her home in Camden, north London, on July 23 at the age of 27 and although her father Mitch wasn't supposed to see her on the Thursday before she died, he paid a visit to her after she found an old box of family photographs that had gone missing when she moved house.

Mitch explained: "When she moved she lost a box of old photographs but she found it the Thursday before she died and rang me. I wasn't supposed to be seeing her because I was going to New York to perform but I went round and that was the last time I saw her. We went through those old photographs and there was only one picture of her, the others were of her family. She loved her family."

Although Mitch insists Amy – who had previously battled drug addiction – was completely recovered, he accepts her years of substance abuse caused her shock death.

During an appearance on TV show 'BBC Breakfast', he said: "She had recovered but the damage had been done previously unfortunately. It wasn't drugs related.

"She was an honest person, we were best friends and I'd ask her about the drugs which she conquered and the drinking which she was conquering and she'd say to me I'll tell you everything dad, if you don't want to know don't ask."
