Tony Blair will today issue a warning to world leaders that they need urgently to forge a consensus on dealing with climate change.
The former British prime minister, who has been working with a panel of international experts on the issue, will warn of a “yawning chasm” between what the scientists say needs to be done and what the politicians say they are prepared to do.
Mr Blair will present his first report on the issue to Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, as the chairman of this year’s G8 summit.
The paper is intended to set how the issues can be addressed ahead on the United Nations climate change negotiations in Copenhagen at the end of next year.
Mr Blair said: “This report is explicitly designed to be a practical way through; not yet another campaigning polemic to wake the world up to the challenges of global warming. The world has woken up. But now it needs to know what to do.”
