An MP believes many Britions fear stem cell research will lead to David Beckham being cloned.

Ian Gibson, a Labour member of Parliament's select committee on science and technology, says people do not understand the debate.

He has given assurances that no Premiership footballers will be cloned despite the House of Lords approving new research.

The peers' decision will allow scientists to explore ways of using embryo cells which control the body's development to help cure genetic diseases.

Mr Gibson said: "I get letters from people thinking we are going to clone David Beckham. We are not going to do that."
