America is reportedly gearing up its war machine with tanks and heavy armour being mobilised in the Gulf.

It follows confirmation that forced weapons inspections are also being considered by the US, as part of a plan to solve the UN’s stand-off with Saddam Hussein.

President George W Bush is promising to consult with Congress before any strike against Saddam.

His spokesman Ari Fleischer says there is "no doubt" that action is needed.
