Egan retires from boxing after defeat to Ward

Irish Olympic silver medalist Ken Egan has announced his retirement from boxing.

The 31-year-old hero of the Beijing Olympics announced his decision in the ring last night after losing the light-heavyweight final to Joe Ward at the Elite National Boxing Championships.

Egan was looking to bow out of the sport by winning an 11th National title, but he was completely overpowered as Ward scored a resounding win by 25 points to five.

Ward again dominated the contest, using his power and strength to win every round on his way to an emphatic 20-point victory.

In the opening bout of the night, Hugh Myres won the Light-flyweight division, defeating TJ Waite 17-8.

London Olympic bronze medal winner Michael Conlon retained his Flyweight title, beating Chris Phelan 20-9.

In a thrilling Light-welterweight final, Ross Hickey retained his crown by beating Ray Moylette 15-11. Hickey won the last round 7-3 after surviving an onslaught from Moylette during the second round.

In the Bantamweight final, Declan Geraghty beat Gary McKenna 16-7, while Jason Quigley became the new Middleweight champion after beating Roy Sheehan 15-6.

Tommy McCarthy was crowned as the Heavyweight champion when he stopped Jimmy Sweeney in the third round of their final.

Katie Taylor also treated the crowd to a spectacle as she beat Karolina Grazcyk of Poland by 28 points five.
